Swivel joint for articulated buses

HEMSCHEIDT articulation systems for public transport

Articulated buses are a part of the local public transport system in many cities. They were developed in order to transport greater passenger numbers in closely built-up urban areas. The big advantage of articulated buses is that they are very manoeuvrable. They are therefore suitable for narrow, tight roads, which long, non-articulated busses would not be able to drive along. An articulated bus can even cope with tight radii when negotiating bends. The principle of articulated busses is simple: A so-called trailer is attached to a solo bus, and this is connected to the front bus by a joint.

Nowadays there are two vehicle concepts for articulated buses, which differ with regard to the drive. So-called pusher vehicles have the driving axle, engine and transmission in the trailer. Puller vehicles have the drivetrain in the leading bus. HEMSCHEIDT provides perfect solutions for both types of articulated buses. Of course, HEMSCHEIDT articulation systems are also available for trolley buses.

Swivel joint for pusher vehicles: Driving stability and safety

Swivel joints in so-called pusher articulated buses do not only have to define the freedom of bending, rolling and pitching, but also have to dampen the yaw movement. This is where the swivel joints play an important role, as they are crucial for the driving stability and safety of an articulated bus. Safety-relevant components have to be rugged, reliable, resilient and always operational. All of these properties are shown by the SKD synchronous damper from HEMSCHEIDT.

Three different damping levels provide consistently optimised damping depending on vehicle speed. Permanently even leverage conditions are provided through the patented gear/rack damping unit. All moving parts are integrated in the hydraulic system, thus enabling optimum lubrication and long service life. The entire system works without a control unit or electronics, which significantly increases the reliability of the synchronous damper. Furthermore, the swivel joint is completely maintenance-free.

Swivel joint for puller vehicles

The tried and proven SKD 420 swivel joint for pusher vehicles, which has been in service for decades, has been adapted to the requirements of puller vehicles. As a result, HEMSCHEIDT can now also supply the manufacturers of puller articulated buses with a sturdy, light-weight and maintenance-free swivel joint that can be integrated easily into the vehicle structure.

Complete middle bus from a single source

Furthermore, HEMSCHEIDT Fahrwerktechnik, in cooperation with the Hübner Group, also offers the complete middle bus (pivoting joint, bellows and floor plate). Articulated bus manufacturers around the world make use of this offer.

Chassis technology for modern rail-mounted vehicles – safe, comfortable and flexible

V-links from HEMSCHEIDT serve as a connection between car parts of rail vehicles. Their modular design enables the customer-specific definition of the length and angle spread. The secure transmission of longitudinal and transverse forces, in combination with a swivel joint that allows the necessary torsional degree of freedom, make the V-links a maintenance-free chassis component. Elastic bearings increase driving comfort and contribute to acoustic decoupling.
